KX-FS-BF-GLST 03/03/24 10:30 AM. Conditons: 55°-60°F, sunny, clear, wind 20+ Mph gusts.
We entered riverbed area to check for signs & examined for evidence of BF activity. Upon arrival we checked a frequented rubbing post and found the top to be imbedded with new hair. These were primarily chestnut w a little white or blonde and older black hairs underneath the chestnut. There was also a treebreak above the post about 6ft high. We collected a sample of the new hairs. While traversing the dense foliage only sparse marks were found seemingly from fingers and toes. No feet prints were located. We recorded many treebreaks throughout the area and along the riverbed. While tracking the breaks we stopped to examine & photograph a fresh example and upon speaking apparently startled a subject and heard loud movement including ground impact and some initial twig snaps about 50 to 60 feet into the foliage. We followed the heavy sounds into the brush but could not locate the individual/s as they reacted to our presence and moved deeper in the foliage and westward along the basin. We moved around the back of the encounter area but did not directly enter their activity. Again only flattened ground litter and divots were found. We also came across a possible* 14in footprint at a cliff crack that gave access into and out of the basin. We found a large open feeding area with scattered cattle remains, (long bones, ribs, pelvic and vertebrae). There were two main deposits about 100' apart. One was the pelvic section, 1/2 the vertebrae and short ribs. The other was the full rib cage which looked discarded by throwing or placed laterally in the foliage. On the pelvic section the ribs were snapped off without teeth marks, parts of the pelvis were snapped off (illium both sides)..both sections were dragged towards tree cover while long bones were located in the open. The long bones were a tibia bone & humerus and were found with teeth marks but not canine in appearance..and both had large incisor marks about .5" wide on the ends. One was broken/snapped in half with marrow removed.
There were no marks in center of the shaft of long bones and no obvious marks from being carried. The only bite marks were at the end of the bone in the form of large incisors with absolutely no marks from chewing from canine/cat/bear. There was additional marking near end of the snapped long bone in a "squiggle" fashion unlike parallel gnawing but very similar to being loosely carried, mouthed and or held while being eaten. Video will be posted soon...
