Javagal Srinath, who is perhaps the fastest bowler in Indian history, signaled a turning point for Indian pace bowling after Kapil Dev's swing captured the public's attention. Javagal Srinath made his ODI debut against Pakistan in the 2nd match of the Willis Trophy at Sharjah on October 18, 1991. He made an impressive debut by taking 1 for 31 in 9 overs, which helped India beat Pakistan by 60 runs.
Srinath went on to have a successful ODI career, taking 315 wickets in 229 matches at an average of 28.09. Srinath was the first Indian fast bowler to take more than 300 wickets in one-day internationals. Srinath could have achieved a lot more if not for having to watch from the sidelines during his initial years and having to combat several injuries right through his playing days. Srinath was a frontline fast bowler for the Indian cricket team until his retirement, and the second Indian pace bowler after Kapil Dev to take 200 Test match wickets. After Kapil Dev retired, Srinath led the Indian fast-bowling attack for over nine years. He remains India's second-highest international wicket-taker with 315, second only to Anil Kumble. In the four World Cups he played in 1992, 1996, 1999, and 2003, he took 44 wickets and was the joint-highest wicket-taker for India in World Cups with Zaheer Khan.[4] He is one of the fastest bowlers to have played for India.
Srinath retired from international cricket after the 2003 Cricket World Cup in South Africa. After retirement, Srinath had a stint as a TV commentator and later became a member of the ICC match referee panel.
