U.S. intervened in Middle East for the first time.
CIA and British Secret Intelligence Service conspired to overthrow Iranian prime minister Mohammad Mosaddegh in Iran, 1953.

Operation Ajax. British intelligence called it Operation Boot. The plot restored Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, a U.S. ally to power.

In 2013, the C.I.A. finally acknowledged its role in the effort to overthrow Mossadegh.
