Nikki Haley secured a victory over Donald Trump in the Republican primary in Washington, DC, marking her first triumph over the former president in the 2024 campaign for the Republican presidential nomination.

Despite losing in her home state of South Carolina, Haley made history as the first woman to win a Republican primary in U.S. history.

Reports from the BBC’s US partner, CBS, indicate that Haley will receive all 19 Republican delegates at stake in Washington, DC, bringing her total to 43 delegates nationwide, a significant gap from Trump’s 247.

Although she won with 62.9% of the vote compared to Trump’s 33.2%, this victory is largely considered symbolic.

Washington, DC, is a predominantly Democrat-leaning jurisdiction, with approximately 23,000 registered Republicans in the city, the BBC reported.
