Why did God allow polygamy in the Bible?

Through Facebook, I have discovered a large number of people who profess to be Christians but support practicing polygamy. I am only familiar with one method: husband and many wives, not vice versa. I have been verbally accosted for stating this is NOT Christian, and the Bible does NOT support this.
