I am being threatened. Not in my survival, no death threats or anything. The danger comes from a little-seen angle. However, in view of technological developments, there have long been concerns about the role that Artificial Intelligence (AI) may take.

Concerns expressed in this video by musician Nick Cave, in response to a letter he received from two fans asking what he thought of GhatGPT regarding creativity.

Concerns I share. For me, expression of creativity lay in playing guitar and singing. Even as a child. I came downstairs in the morning and the first thing I did was turn on the radio, sit in front of it and sing along… well, imitate the sounds sung, with gallons of “mommy apple juice.” I was three, what do you want?

A few years later I looked forward to Top Pop every week, for a long time the only pop program on TV, in a time long before the internet and YouTube, where nowadays you can find almost anything from any artist.

Then I knew what I wanted to be when I grew up. Pop musician! Something different than a firefighter. I got a Spanish guitar, not really what I wanted, and lessons in classical guitar, which I didn't want. Well, parents... It didn't take long until I stopped going to class and bought candy with the five guilders (the Dutch currency for the euro, this for the young ones among you) and then used it to buy friends.

What also didn't last long was the phone call from the guitar teacher to my mother, explaining why I stopped coming. Clap in the evening, the guitar disappeared under lock and key for years.

About five years later, this rascal was now at a boarding school, I had the opportunity to take lessons again, but now with popular songs. This time I persevered and learned to play the basic chords in a few months, with which you can play almost anything. Pleased!

By chance I got into sound mixing for live bands, which led to a one-year internship in a real recording studio, the Tango Studio in Eindhoven. Here I learned how music was created, how it was put together, and I started to delve deeper into it.
.
In addition to mixing and playing at home, I also played on the street for hours several times a week for years. And what I used to dream about came true. I was seen and heard by a professional musician who had miraculously just moved down the street from me. He asked me if I wanted to play with him as a duo.
.
That's what we did, my first steps as a professional musician! Wow! It became even more beautiful. He also worked for a large party company, arranged an audition that was very successful, and so I played at themed corporate parties for four years, which I also presented.

I can't explain how deeply music can touch me, how I get lost in it. So I can relate well to what Nick Cave says.

Now my art is language. And therein lies the threat. I enjoy translating and writing. Until I'm replaced by ChatGPT?

Ik wordt bedreigd. Niet in mijn voortbestaan, geen doodsbedreigingen of zo. Het gevaar komt uit een weinig geziene hoek. Hoewel, met het oog op technologische ontwikkelingen leven er al lang zorgen over de rol die Kunstmatige Intelligentie (KI) of Artificial Intelligence (AI) mogelijk in zal gaan nemen.

Zorgen die in deze video worden verwoord door muzikant Nick Cave, in een reactie op een brief die hij ontving van twee fans met de vraag wat hij vond van GhatGPT ten aanzien van creativiteit.

Zorgen die ik deel. Voor mij lag uiting van creativiteit in gitaar spelen en zingen. Als kind al. Ik kwam ‘s ochtends beneden en het eerste dat ik deed was de radio aanzetten, ervoor te gaan zitten en meezingen … nou ja, de gezongen klanken nabootsen, met liters “mamma appelsappen.” Ik was drie, wat wil je?

Wat jaren later keek ik elke week uit naar Top Pop, lange tijd het enige popprogramma op tv, in een tijd ver voor internet en YouTube, waar je tegenwoordig zo goed als alles kunt vinden van om het even welke artiest.
.
Toen wist ik wat ik later wilde worden. Popmuzikant! Weer eens wat anders dan brandweerman. Ik kreeg een Spaanse gitaar, niet echt wat ik wilde, en les in klassieke gitaar, wat ik niet wilde. Tja, ouders … Het duurde dan ook niet lang tot ik niet meer naar de les ging en van de vijf gulden (de Nederlandse munteenheid voor de euro, dit voor de jonkies onder jullie) snoep kocht om daar vervolgens weer vriendjes mee te kopen.
.
Wat ook niet lang duurde was het telefoontje van de gitaarleraar naar mijn moeder, waarom ik niet meer kwam. ‘s Avonds klappen, de gitaar verdween voor jaren achter slot en grendel.
.
Weer zo’n vijf jaar later, dit boefje zat inmiddels op een internaat, had ik weer de mogelijkheid om les te nemen, maar nu met populaire liedjes. Deze keer zette ik door en leerde in een paar maanden de basisakkoorden spelen, waarmee je zo goed als alles mee kon spelen. Blij!
.
Bij toeval rolde ik in het geluid mixen van live bandjes, wat leidde tot een jaar stage in een heuse opnamestudio, de Tango Studio in Eindhoven. Hier leerde ik hoe muziek tot stand kwam, hoe het in elkaar zat, en ik ging me er meer en meer in verdiepen.
.
Naast mixen en thuis spelen stond ik ook jarenlang verschillende keren per week uren lang op straat te spelen. En waar ik vroeger van droomde kwam uit. Ik werd gezien en gehoord door een beroepsmuzikant die wonderwel net bij mij in de straat was komen wonen. Hij vroeg me of ik samen met hem als duo wilde spelen.

Dat deden we, mijn eerste schreden als beroepsmuzikant! Wow! Het werd nog mooier. Hij werkte ook voor een groot partybedrijf, regelde een auditie die zeer succesvol was, en zo speelde ik vier jaar op bedrijfsfeesten met een thema, die ik ook presenteerde.

Ik kan niet uitleggen hoe diep muziek me kan raken, hoe ik erin opga. Ik kan me dus goed verplaatsen in wat Nick Cave zegt.
.
Nu is mijn kunst taal. En daarin ligt de bedreiging. Ik geniet van het vertalen en schrijven. Tot ik word vervangen door ChatGPT?
