Statins, we’re told, can improve the health of people with high cholesterol. But what happens when we dig deeper into studies on the topic?
For one, the studies appear to show lower cancer rates among statin users. But is there another, hidden factor that explains why these people are healthier?
Biochemical researcher Dr. Dayan Goodenowe highlights some of the startling holes in the ‘statin story’ for Vital Signs – “Cholesterol Scam? PART 2.”
Dr. Goodenowe has spent decades building systems for the diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of a range of diseases—including autism, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), and Alzheimer’s disease.
Earlier, in “Cholesterol Scam? PART 1” , he explained how “higher cholesterol” can actually be a sign of good health. As such, are the widespread efforts to lower cholesterol with statins and other drugs well advised?
The first statin was approved by the FDA in 1987. They are now the most commonly prescribed class of drug in America.
On Vital Signs with Brendon Fallon, we explore whether the research really supports this wide-scale use of statins in society.
