Thousands gather for Alexei Navalny's funeral in Moscow

Thousands of people turned out to attend the funeral of the opposition leader Alexei Navalny in Moscow, despite a heavy police presence and the risk of repressive measures against them.

Crowds gathered outside the Church of the Icon of the Mother of God Soothes My Sorrows in the southern Maryino district of the capital, where a service was held.

Inside, video showed Navalny’s mother approaching his body in an open casket in which the campaigner’s body, dressed in a suit and tie, was laid on a brocaded piece of white cloth and covered with red and white flowers. Other relatives and friends held candles.
