Texas Governor Greg Abbott announced on Friday that the state is constructing an 80-acre facility in Eagle Pass to house Texas National Guard troops deployed as part of Operation Lone Star. This $10 billion state effort aims to deter unlawful immigration into Texas.

The new base camp will provide housing for 1,800 to 2,300 soldiers in individual rooms, with capacity for more troops if deployment is expanded. Abbott noted soldiers are currently scattered in tents, hotels, and private homes, sometimes located an hour away.

Major General Thomas Suelzer stated the base will initially hold 300 troops by mid-April, then add 300 more beds every 30 days until reaching full capacity. The cost of the project was not provided.
