Canadian Liberal Party Proposes Life Sentences for Hate Speech

Canada has proposed new legislation, C-63, to combat online abuse by increasing penalties for hate crimes. The bill aims to regulate harmful online content, such as hate speech, incitement of violence, and sexualized content involving children or victims of sexual violence. The proposed law would establish a digital safety commission to enforce these rules and empower a digital safety ombudsperson to support victims. Social media platforms would be required to remove harmful content promptly, with fines of up to $10 million for non-compliance. The bill also includes amendments to the Criminal Code and the Canadian Human Rights Act to address hate speech more effectively. While the Liberal Party supports the bill, the Conservative Party has expressed concerns about potential censorship and bureaucracy. The New Democratic Party has criticized the government for delays in introducing the legislation but indicated support for it.
