King David, a central figure in the Hebrew Bible, was born in Bethlehem around 1040 B.C. He rose from humble beginnings as a shepherd to become the second king of Israel, succeeding Saul. David is renowned for his military prowess, including his victory over the Philistine giant Goliath, and his establishment of Jerusalem as the capital city. Despite his triumphs, David faced personal challenges, including his affair with Bathsheba and the rebellion of his son Absalom. Nevertheless, David is remembered as a figure of great faith, credited with composing many of the Psalms, and his reign is often portrayed as a golden age in Israel's history.
