We live in a society where many people believe that they can have a relationship with Jesus without obeying some of the things that Jesus tells us to do. The problem is, we can only grow so much when we do it on our own. Jesus has designed us to be in fellowship with one another and set up the five fold ministry of the church for a reason. Yet many have FORSAKEN His ways (which are better than ours) because we were offended by a local congregation, or we may refuse to submit to headship in our lives. We then try to justify such things by saying, "The churches are messed up and bad"
I agree, a lot of churches do NOT have the Spirit in them, which why it's important that we all be on "one accord" (Acts 2:1) as they ALL were on the day of Pentecost.
At the same time, we all are flawed, imperfect, and will make mistakes. Another reason why we have to remain in fellowship. Instead of forsaking the church/congregation, we need to be forsaking ourselves and things that pull us away from the gathering.

Hebrews 10:24-25
"And let us consider one another to provoke unto love and to good works: Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching."
