Longhorn & Angus Cattle Mob Invade Yard - E-Z Herding By Frightening Monkey Merely Showing Face

Yes, it was my fault as NO GATES should be left open. I learned the happy new lesson of gate hinge maintenance and why my uncle was so furious when my brothers and I used them as swings. Did I digress again?
But this begs the question: what's the big deal with herding cattle? Why all the horses, dogs, 4-wheelers, trucks, etc to move them ... short of having to walk the distance, that is? Could it be that romantic vision of cowboy astride quarter horse with trusty cattle dog be an overblown myth?
I could just be especially scary looking. Seemed easy at any rate. Besides any hope of aiming them in the right direction. Yep, I'm missing something.
