The unexpected calculation

A theoretical error in the design of the Castle Bravo bomb was the reason it exploded with a force of 15 instead of 6 megatons. Scientists only considered tritium, deuterium and lithium-6 as combustible substances, so they didn't mind leaving lithium-7, which made up 60% of the bomb. The result was a production of tritium beyond normal, which increased the rate of nuclear fusion and, consequently, fission. The wrong calculation would be repeated with Castle Romeo, but the succession of errors did not stop there.

The Bravo detonation was the largest nuclear explosion ever in the history of the United States and caused the worst radiological disaster in the United States.
