A South African man, who subjected an Alaska Native woman to torture while narrating and recording a video of her demise, was declared guilty of first-degree murder on Thursday for the killings of both her and another Native woman.

Brian Steven Smith, a 52-year-old from South Africa, received a unanimous verdict from the Anchorage jury after deliberating for less than two hours.

Smith displayed no visible reaction in court, maintaining a stoic demeanor as the judge announced the jury’s decision.

His arrest ensued when a woman, who later became a key witness in the Anchorage trial, stole his cellphone from his truck and uncovered disturbing footage from 2019.

This footage was then copied onto a memory card and ultimately handed over to the police, NBC News reported.
