TODAY IN PHILOSOPHY OF HISTORY: Karl Jaspers and the Present as History

Friday 23 February 2024 is the 141st anniversary of the birth of Karl Jaspers (23 February 1883 – 26 February 1969), who was born in Oldenburg, Germany on this date in 1883.

Jaspers wrote about philosophy of history in many contexts, but most especially he concerned himself with the present as history, which can be understood as an aspect of the characteristic engagement of existence-philosophy, as Jaspers called it. Jaspers’ philosophy of history is thus repeatedly and continuously self-referential (we could call it recursive if we liked), but Jaspers makes a virtue of this, as he says that the task of existence-philosophy is to elucidate and make actual the being of the thinker.
