Thanks for checking out my lesson. If you'd like to know how to play like this, be sure to check out my free guitar course at https://tinyurl.com/danh411.

This is a great new practice routine / warm-up lesson to get your fingers moving the way you want them to. Just like in the last lesson, I break down some shapes and patterns that aren't very musical but you can eventually apply them to scale shapes to create interesting phrases, runs, and licks. These patterns and shapes will work the kinks out in your fingering routines, help you with your right-hand / left-hand synchronization, and give you alternate picking practice. We'll explore how to apply these patterns to scale shapes in future lessons, but for now you'll be able to use these exercises to help you better master the fretboard.

This is Part 2 in a 4-part series of lesson where instead of focusing on theory and scale shapes, I’m spending some time showing you some essential practice routines that will help you build speed and synchronize your right hand and left hand.

In the previous lesson, I focused on 6 basic alternate picking shapes that would not only lead to right-hand, left-hand synchronization but would also help you move between various patterns with your left hand, playing with all four fingers, and moving from string-to-string with ease.

In Part 2, I use these same 6 shapes to help you understand 2 different picking patterns, one of which is used by players like Eric Johnson. These picking patterns can be applied to all kinds of scale shapes, especially pentatonic boxes. While these practice routines aren’t specific to any scale shape or even very musical, they will help you move between strings and get a very good feel for how to play more complex patterns in the future.
