“Pioneer aviator. Born in Crailsheim, Germany, he flew the first jet aircraft, the Arado Ar 234 and the Messerschmitt Me 262, in World War II for the German Luftwaffe. First soloed in 1935 at the age of 14. When Lufthansa Airlines resumed operations after the war on April 1, 1955, he was one of the first to earn the designation of flight captain and initially flew a DC3 for them. Later when Lufthansa converted to jet operations he became one of the first to fly a jet airliner. In 1967 he successfully landed a Boeing 707 carrying Germany's presdident, Heinrich Luebke, at Katmandu's high mountain airport, considered impossible at the time. In a career covering 43 years, he had accumulated over 29,000 hours of flying time in 100+ types of aircraft on most routes around the world in everything from the DC3 Gooney Bird to the 747 Jumbo Jet. Appointed by Lufthansa to the position of Chief Pilot in 1971, he retired from flying because of age in 1972 but remained on Lutfhansa's management board until 1985 responsible for traffic and flight operations.”
