Emma, one of seven siblings, slept alone in a large house near Staffordshire moorlands. She asked her maid to wake her early. One August morning in 1840, she was awakened by a sharp tapping. Despite saying "thank you" to the first two raps, the third was a gust of wind, drawing curtains up. She saw her aunt's face peering between curtains. An apparition bit her thumb, but vanished. Dressed, she went downstairs, finding no one. Her father, coming down, asked why she was up so early. He then visited his sister-in-law's house, finding she had just died. Emma, hearing this, fainted.
