In 2024, 18 Allies (of 31 members of NATO) are expected to spend at least 2% of their GDP on defense – a six-fold increase since 2014, when only three Allies met the 2% or more guideline. Over the past decade, NATO Allies in Europe have steadily increased their collective investment in defense – from 1.47% of their combined GDP in 2014 (during the Obama era), to 2% in 2024, when they are investing a combined total of $380 billion in defense.
