FROM DR CONGO MINES TO TESLA HOW THE WEST LOOTS AFRICA EXPLAINED
The true scale of the plunder in DR Congo is rarely visible. In this segment of our podcast on the DRC, Kambale Musavuli from Friends of the Congo draws a detailed thread showing who's involved in the cobalt trade all the way from the ground in Congo's mines, unscrupulous international businessmen, to its use by giant companies.
The conflict in DRC has exacted a high cost on its people. But benefiting from the misery are companies like Tesla and Apple, who are currently battling a lawsuit surrounding the use of child labour in the country. While countries like the US come up with clever schemes to more easily extract Congolese resources, the merit of initiatives such as the Lobito corridor need to be judged by how much it improves the lives of ordinary Congo citizens
