What happens when a dual U.S-Russian citizen lands in the crosshairs of international politics?

In the case of thirty-three-year-old Ksenia Karelina, the answer is arrest and charges of treason. Karelina, a spa employee in California and U.S citizen since twenty twenty-one, was visiting family in Russia when the Federal Security Service, or FSB, detained her in Yekaterinburg.
The charges? Allegedly donating fifty-one dollars and eighty cents to a Ukrainian charity. This seemingly benign act of charity, in the eyes of Russian law enforcement, was a treasonous act.
