The Fetterman Massacre refers to a significant event in American history that occurred on December 21, 1866, near Fort Phil Kearny in present-day Wyoming. It involved a group of Lakota Sioux, Cheyenne, and Arapaho warriors ambushing and overwhelming a detachment of 81 United States Army soldiers commanded by Captain William J. Fetterman. The Native American warriors lured the soldiers out of the fort's protective range and attacked them, resulting in the death of all soldiers, including Fetterman. The massacre was one of several conflicts between Native American tribes and the US Army during the Plains Indian Wars, marking a significant victory for the Native American forces. It contributed to the escalation of the conflict between Native Americans and the US government over control of the Great Plains.
