The Sarah DeLeon Cold Case Murder - Det (Ret) Jeff Cheek Describes the Scene and the Investigation

In 1989, Sarah DeLeon was 18 yrs old.

She had her whole life in front of her.

She was young and vibrant, fun-loving, beautiful and everyone seemed to like her.

Except one person - and she ended up being the prime suspect in Sarah's murder.

In December in 1989, a train conductor noticed from his train window what he thought was a body laying next to a large, cylindrical bridge support. He stopped his train and went back to look and sure enough, it was the body of a young girl.

She had been brutally stabbed 22 times, many of those wounds in the neck area.

In the investigative circles an attack that vicious and brutal is often referred to as a 'crime of passion', and it usually involves two people that know each other.

When police arrived they noticed drag marks in the snow and gravel, with periodic, small pools of blood between the road and where the body lay. The distance was 18-20 feet, at a slight decline, and the ground was frozen solid.

Not far off was a popular high school partying place, and both the victim and the suspect knew about it, and how isolated it was. The suspect also likely knew that police rarely went down there because it was so isolated.

Sarah's body was dragged and left in a way it would have been very difficult to see it from the road. The murderer obviously didn't anticipate a train conductor seeing it from the nearby tracks.

Where had the investigation led since 1989?

It's taken more twists and turns than most would believe, including potentially being tied to another murder just 5 years later that involved the same suspect and another couple.

And Detective (Ret) Jeff Cheek has been involved the entire time.

He was a cadet when a homicide detective grabbed him and said he was going out on a homicide call with him. The victim was Sarah, and Jeff thought he knew her and she had gone to his school.

Could a serial killer be walking the streets to this day?
