How Did Forensic Genealogy Help The Phoenix Canal Murders? Dr. Colleen Fitzpatrick Pt 2
The Phoenix Canal Murders occurred in 1992-93. The murders took place in Phoenix, Arizona, and each of them involved a young woman that went for a bike ride in the early evening along the Arizona Canal, and neither one of them ever returned.
The victims' names were Melanie Bernas and Angela Brosso.
While at a conference in Phoenix Dr Fitzpatrick met with some members of the Phoenix PD and explained to them what she could do to possibly help their case. They sent her the data, she ran it in her system, and came out with the name Miller.
The killer's name was Brian Patrick Miller.
Forensic genealogy is changing the way cases are solved, and many of them are years if not decades old. If the investigators can procure DNA material from the crime scene, then even if the suspect's DNA is not in the DNA database they can oftentimes use genealogy methods to develop a family tree and a name.
Dr. Colleen Fitzpatrick has a Ph.D. in nuclear physics. So how did she become one of the leading experts in the world in forensic genealogy?
It's all about the numbers. Statistics. Getting rid of the data that is not relevant and identifying what is.
And when two of the most knowledgeable homicide detectives we know recommend we talk to her, we do it! After all, aren't both Lindsey Wade and Joe Kennedy awesome All Things Crime interviews? So of course they would know!
Tune in to this fascinating discussion with the founder of Identifinders International and learn about some of the amazing cases she has helped solve!
