David Stockman is the author of a new book on the history of the Trump presidency – Trump’s War on Capitalism – which assesses it on ground of fiscal and monetary responsibility. He concludes with a message that no one wants to hear: This presidency resulted in a vast and even unthinkable expansion of government spending and power. By any measure of what constitutes capitalism – a free commercial sector with limited government – the Trump term was an enormous failure. In this interview, he presents the core facts over spending, debt, and monetary policy, from the standpoint of the values traditionally claimed by Republicans. He concludes that the Trump administration shredded all those values. Stockman has a career-long record of non-partisan assessments of exactly this sort, telling truths that are wildly inconvenient to the prevailing political narrative.
