It’s been a record-breaking year for ice coverage on the Great Lakes.
As of last week, the five lakes stood at just under 3% (2.92%) ice cover. Based on records going back to 1973, they're usually at about 40% ice coverage collectively at this time of year.
Lake Huron came in with the most at over 5 1/2 percent, with Lake Erie and Ontario coming in essentially ice-less.
According to the National Weather Service, the outlook shows to stay the same with February into April calling for higher-than-normal temperatures and lower-than-normal precipitation for the Great Lakes region.
