The Spider, Master of Men was in reality the wealthy young man-about-town crimebuster, Richard Wentworth. The first Spider appearance, was in october of 1933 with the story "The Spider Strikes". The series was initially penned by R.T.M. Scott, but beginning with the third issue of December 1933, Grant Stockbridge was credited with the writing and The Spider's adventures began to take on mythic proportions. The hero struggles pitted him against foes such as The Mad Horde, The City Destroyer, The Octopus, Serpent of Destruction and The Devil's Death Dwarfs. Over time, the character of The Spider changed from simply a nickname for detective Wentworth, into a shocking caped and fanged wild man that Wentworth dressed up as, to scare criminals. In his adventures, Wentworth was also aided by the lovely Nita Van Sloan, his trusted Hindu servant Ram Singh, his butler Ronald Jackson, and unwittingly helped by Inspector Kirkpatrick. The original 118 Spider pulp issues ran from 1933 to 1944; But many decades later, new spider stories began to emerge, from Moonstone books, and also comic books, some including teamup crossover events like "Masks" from Dynamite Entertainment, with appearances of other classic pulp heroes and beyond, like the Shadow, Green Hornet, Black Bat, Green Lama, Zorro, Miss Fury, Black Terror and others. As for the first Spider movie serial, "The Spider Web", it was originally released in theaters in 1938, with Warren Hull in the roles of Richard Wentworth, Blinky McQuade, the Spider, and Iris Meredith in the role of Nita Van Sloan.
