The story of Tomb Raider II tells about the mystical Dagger of Xian, a weapon that in ancient times was used by the Emperor of China to command his army. By plunging the Dagger into a person's heart, the weapon has the power to transform them into a dragon. A flashback reveals that the last battle that was fought by the Dagger ended in defeat, when the warrior monks of Tibet managed to remove the knife from the Emperor's heart. The Dagger returned to its place in the Great Wall and was stored for centuries.

Lara Croft's mission is to find the Dagger of Xian, a dagger with mystical powers whose ability to transform into a terrible dragon. On the other hand, Marco Bartoli, an Italian millionaire, is also looking for such an artifact, under these conditions an exciting race begins in which the fate of the Earth is at stake.

The game begins at the Great Wall of China, where Lara Croft is investigating the truth behind the legend of the Dagger. When she discovers the entrance to the artifact's chamber, she realizes that the key to unlock the door is missing, and she is suddenly attacked by an Italian who claims he works for a man named Marco Bartoli.
Following clues gathered in China, Lara discovers that Marco Bartoli is a leader of the Venetian Mafia and founded a cult obsessed with the ancient Dagger. She discovers that her hiding place is in romantic Venice. She travels there and then follows Bartoli aboard his plane, which heads to an oil station in the Adriatic Sea. Instead, the cult is carrying out excavations in a sunken ship called Maria Doria, which once belonged to Gianni Bartoli, Marco's father. Lara knows from a detained Tibetan monk, Brother Chan, that the wreck has an ancient Tibetan artifact called a Seraph. For generations, the monks of Barkhang Monastery have dedicated themselves to preserving the Talion, the key to the door that locks the Dagger of Xian, even though it was sunk with Maria Doria.

The Seraph, in turn, is the keystone to the chamber that holds Talion. Before Brother Chan reveals more, he is killed by Bartoli. Lara dives into the wreckage of the ship and successfully recovers the Seraph, after which she goes to the Barkhang monastery in Tibet. With the help of the warrior monks, she opens the tomb for Talion and recovers the artifact to its original location.

A speeding jeep with Bartoli in pursuit ends up back in China, where Lara opens the door to the chamber that holds the Dagger. Before she can reach the artifact, however, Lara dives into the catacombs beneath the Great Wall. However, Bartoli plunges the dagger into his heart, transforming himself into a dragon. In the final confrontation, Lara takes advantage of the temporarily unconscious creature and pulls the dagger from Bartoli's heart. In the epilogue, the rest of Bartoli's men follow Lara to England and invade her mansion.
