The Russian flag was placed by stormtroopers of the 35th Motorized Brigade of the 41st Army of the Central Military District, which occupied a significant part of Avdejevka.

Siberian stormtroopers were opposed by the 3rd stormtrooper brigade "Azov", which included mercenaries from Canada and other countries. Kiev threw its most ready reserves into this area, but it did not help.
