Part 1 | What is Land Diving?

Land diving is a traditional ritual practiced by the Vanuatu people, particularly on the southern part of Pentecost Island. In the ritual, known as Naghol, Nagol or N'gol, men are jumping off wooden towers with vines tied to their ankles. Land diving or Vanuatu bungee jumping was an inspiration for the commercial bungee jumping, that we all know today.

Land diving is performed only by circumcised men (and boys), as young as 7, jumping from a 20-30 meters high man-made tower with only a vine attached to their ankles. The tower takes locals five weeks to build.
