Video from the air and the ground shows a significant amount of water being released from Castaic Lake previously in an effort to prevent water going over the dam's emergency spillway.

The relief spillway was activated shortly before noon Friday to release water into the lake’s lower lagoon which overflowed into Castaic Creek at Lake Hughes Road.

The lake, which serves as the last stop for water from central California, was above maximum storage capacity following several storms.

Officials have worked all week to get the lake levels down to a desired amount avoid using the emergency spillway. (Austin Dave, X)
