The upcoming solar event on April 8, 2024, promises an awe-inspiring spectacle: a total solar eclipse visible from parts of North America, with Mexico offering some prime locations for witnessing this rare phenomenon.

The path of totality spans from northwest Mexico across the United States to southeastern Canada, stretching approximately 115 miles (185 kilometers) wide on average. Within this path, observers will have the unique opportunity to experience daytime darkness and catch a glimpse of the sun's corona—the outer layer of its atmosphere—with the naked eye for up to 4 minutes and 28 seconds. This path, known as the moon's umbra, marks where the moon fully obstructs the sun's disk.

The moon's shadow will make its initial contact with Earth approximately 370 miles (600 kilometers) off the west coast of Mexico at Isla Socorro—a haven for divers seeking encounters with sharks, humpback whales, and massive manta rays—before journeying to three of the Islas Marías just 60 miles (100 km) from the mainland. Mazatlán, situated on the western coast of Mexico, will be the first mainland region to witness totality, followed by Durango, Torreón, and Monclova as the path progresses northeastward toward the U.S. border at Piedras Negras.

The moon's shadow will traverse Mexico in approximately 25 minutes, crossing through multiple time zones, with totality occurring between 11:07 a.m. MST and 1:32 p.m. CST. According to Xavier Jubier's interactive Google Map for solar eclipses, the path will measure 124 miles (199 km) wide at the Pacific Coast and 121 miles (195 km) wide at the U.S. border. Along the centerline through Mexico, totality will last between 4 minutes and 26 seconds to 4 minutes and 28 seconds.

While clear skies anywhere within the path of totality will afford viewers a chance to witness the total solar eclipse, certain locations stand out for their optimal viewing conditions. Here are some recommended spots in Mexico to observe the 2024 total solar eclipse:

Mazatlán Malecón; Mazatlán, Sinaloa
El Faro Lighthouse; Mazatlán, Sinaloa
El Quelite, Sinaloa
Victoria de Durango, Durango
Cuatrociénegas Biosphere Reserve, Coahuila
