The cross is the answer to the dilemma between God and human beings. Because of His incredible love for us, God chose to send His Son Jesus Christ to live a perfect life and die a horrific death, taking upon Himself the very wrath of God in the place of guilty sinners. He then rose from the dead defeating sin and death.
