In 1586, a fortification appeared in these places to defend the southern borders of the state. This year is taken as the official date of the founding of Samara. The fortress became a city in 1688. The name came from a tributary of the Volga - the Samara River. It was originally referred to as Samara town. There are several versions explaining the origin of this name. On the one hand, "samar" is translated from Turkic as "steppe hand", and on the other, the name has Greek roots and it has the meaning "merchant".
