For Black History Month, I'm highlighting Shirley Chisholm. She was a trailblazing figure in American politics and an influential leader in the fight for civil rights and gender equality. In 1968, Chisholm became the first African American woman elected to the United States Congress, representing New York's 12th congressional district. In 1972, she made history again by becoming the first African American candidate for a major party's nomination for President of the United States and the first woman to run for the Democratic Party's presidential nomination.

Shirley Chisholm was known for her passionate advocacy for the rights of marginalized communities, including women, people of color, and those living in poverty. She was a powerful voice for equality and social justice, and her legacy continues to inspire people around the world. Chisholm's famous motto, "Unbought and Unbossed," encapsulates her independent spirit and unwavering commitment to her principles.
