How do law enforcement agencies avoid their cases falling into the trap of fake news? It can happen in an instant, especially with the insatiable demand for instant reports, explanations, and answers to questions where there may not be any, the law enforcement Public Affairs Officer (PIO) and Public Affairs Director (for the larger agencies) are critical.

In today's now-now world the delicate balance between the public's right to know and the sensitive and often rapidly evolving details of an investigation are always at odds. Ensuring that balance doesn't fall over the cliff towards one side or the other is the job of the law enforcement agency's PIO or Public Affairs Officer. When the organization consists of multiple offices the executive often has one person to oversee all the PIOs and flow of information, and that is exactly what Nelly Miles does.

And what a job! As if keeping the narrative about a case, conflict or issue on the true path isn't difficult enough when it's just one agency, imagine it when there is an entire state of agencies involved! Georgia has 800 law enforcement agencies, and Nelly Miles has to know at least a little about each one, a lot of the agency requires the help of the GBI or Georgia Bureau of Investigation.

In this All Things Crime episode Nelly discusses her role as the PAD, and how difficult it can be when there are no rules for rampant opinions on social media, but her ability to counter any false information is very limited, especially in ongoing investigations. It's a difficult job, but fortunately, amazing people like Nelly are willing to step up and do it!
