Neon has released the official trailer for Origin, Ava DuVernay’s ambitious adaptation of Isabel Wilkerson’s Pulitzer-winning book Caste: The Origin of Our Discontents, focusing the drama on Wilkerson and her book’s own origin story.

Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor stars as the author in the pic, which hits theaters January 19, 2024 after it world premiered this fall at the Venice Film Festival.

DuVernay wrote, produced and directed the film, which follows journalist Wilkerson, grappling with her own personal tragedy, as she sets herself on a path of global investigation and discovery to write her book. Despite the project’s colossal scope, she finds beauty and bravery while crafting one of the defining American books of our time.

Jon Bernthal, Niecy Nash-Betts, Vera Farmiga, Audra McDonald, Nick Offerman, Blair Underwood, Finn Wittrock, Jasmine Cephas-Jones and Connie Nielsen also star. Paul Garnes and DuVernay produced via her Array Filmworks.

Neon acquired Origin just ahead of its bow in Venice, where DuVernay became the first African-American woman director in competition in the fest’s 80-year history.
