Although it's too late to prevent the impeachment of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, the already slim Republican majority in the House has further diminished. Tom Suozzi, a Democratic candidate who previously served three terms representing New York's 3rd congressional district before the election of former Rep. George Santos in 2022, emerged victorious in a hard-fought race to replace the Republican in a special election held on Tuesday. Suozzi defeated GOP candidate Mazi Pilip in the special election, which was called after Santos was expelled from Congress. The Associated Press declared Suozzi as the winner approximately an hour after polls closed, with Suozzi holding around 59% of the vote compared to Pilip's 41%, with 52% of the votes counted. The district encompasses portions of Long Island and Queens.
