Welcome to our channelPower of knowledge. In this video you will learn about how to perform CPR to infants or Child.
CPR stands for cardiopulmonary resuscitation. Infant and child CPR is an emergency technique used to help oxygen and blood flow in a baby or child when their heart and breathing have stopped.
The CPR procedure includes chest compressions, which push blood from the heart through the body, and mouth-to-mouth breathing, which provides oxygen to the lungs to support circulation and oxygen levels.
There are specific rules for resuscitating infants and children. Infants are those under 1 year old, and children follow different guidelines from age 1 up to a weight of 121 lbs.
Around 50 to 65% of children requiring CPR are younger than 1 year old, with most of them being less than 6 months old.
Here's a step-by-step guide for performing CPR on an infant or child in an emergency:
Step 1: Check for responsiveness:
Gently tap the infant or child's shoulder to see if they respond. If they don't respond, move to the next step and immediately call 911, or ask someone else to call.
Step 2: Perform 30 chest compressions:
Place the baby or child on their back on a flat, firm surface.
For a baby, put both thumbs side by side at the center of the baby's chest, just below the nipple line.
- Use both thumbs simultaneously to push down firmly and quickly.
- Push the chest 1 to 1 ½ inches deep at a rate of 100 to 120 compressions per minute.
- Allow the chest to return to its normal position after each compression.
For a small child, use a one-handed CPR technique:
- Position the heel of one hand at the center of the child's chest.
- Push down firmly and quickly about 2 inches deep at a rate of 100 to 120 compressions per minute.
Step 3: Provide 2 breaths:
- Cover your mouth over the baby or child's lips and give a gentle breath for about 1 second.
- Ensure that their chest rises with each breath.
- Allow the air to escape before giving the next breath.
Step 4: Continue with sets of 30 chest compressions and 2 breaths until:
- You notice a clear sign of life or the medical team arrives.
