Biden hits Trump for NATO remarks

In a brief appearance on Tuesday, Biden criticized Trump for his comments on NATO, accusing the former president of being “transactional” and having “yielded” to Russian President Vladimir Putin.

“Trump gave an invitation to Putin to invade some of our NATO allies,” the president said. “For God’s sake, it’s dumb, it’s shameful, it’s un-American,” Biden added.

During a rally on Saturday, Trump mentioned a purported conversation with a foreign leader of NATO and asserted that he would not defend alliance members who failed to contribute at least 2 percent of their economic output.

“I would not protect you. In fact, I would encourage them to do whatever the hell they want,” he said, referring to a hypothetical attack from Russia. “You gotta pay. You gotta pay your bills.”

The remarks have raised concerns across Europe and prompted a rare rebuke from NATO’s chief.

While Democrats criticized the comments, the GOP is divided, with some Republicans defending Trump’s statements, The Hill reported.
