why does monaco even exist?

In 1215, Monaco was founded as a colony of Genoa, with House of Grimaldi ruling from 1297. In the 1300s, Genoa lost Monaco to the Crown of Aragon, in a conflict over Corsica. In 1419, the House of Grimaldi purchased Monaco from the the Crown of Aragon.
