'I have never encountered a situation where people were happy because I discovered something.
What you have to understand is, scientists are looking for funds, grants. social status, power and influence. And the bigger you are the more you're looking for that. It was so antagonistic that a very brillant student of mine gave up physics.
I discovered then, by mid career, that 'wow, they don't want to know.' I was just so disgusted with the whole thing. We solved an important problem, and it was a lot of fun, and intellectually stimulating, and I discovered that no one wanted to know the answer.'
