America's Shoplifting Crisis: A Deep Dive into Politics and Morality

Cities across America are experiencing epidemics of shoplifting that are so severe that they are forcing store closures. As these closures are occurring in communities of color, Liberals instinctively lay the blame for this on racism and corporate accountability. They believe that stores should remain open in order to serve the public good and not to just for profits. Conservatives lay the blame on reductions in punishments for crime such as shoplifting. If you remove the punishments for shoplifting, you will get more shoplifting. To them, the solution is obvious, make shoplifting a crime again. What explains these divergent views is that reason is an illusion and man is not rational. The truth is that our political positions are the result of evolution, not reason. In this video I will explain why this is using the work of Thomas Sowell and Jonathan Haidt with a focus on the fairness / cheating axis of Haidt’s morality matrix.
