Jamaican graphic artist and photographer Neville Garrick, renowned for his award-winning role as art director for reggae icon Bob Marley, passed away peacefully on Tuesday night in California after a brief battle with cancer, as announced by his family. Aged 73, Garrick served as the art director at the Daily News daily newspaper in the 1970s and gained prominence for designing numerous Marley album covers and backdrops for the Reggae Sunsplash festival in the 1980s. He also collaborated with other major reggae artists like Burning Spear and Steel Pulse.

In reflection, his daughter Naomi Garrick, CEO of Garrick Communications Ltd, expressed the family's deep loss, emphasizing Neville's multifaceted role as a storyteller, artist, author, speaker, and family man. Born Kenneth Neville Anthony Garrick, his five-decade artistic career had a profound impact on music album covers, posters, logos, and stage designs, creating over 100 album covers for reggae legends such as Marley, Jimmy Cliff, Peter Tosh, Bunny Wailer, Burning Spear, The Wailers, Steel Pulse, and the I-Three.

Notably, Garrick's visionary work included the iconic 'Haile Selassie I' stage and lighting design accompanying Bob Marley during the revolutionary 1970s and 1980s. His art played a key role in introducing Ethiopian art and culture to Western audiences. Neville Garrick's artistic journey began at Kingston College in Jamaica and continued at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), where he actively participated in the Civil Rights Movement and became a vital figure in the Black Students Union, mentored by Angela Davis.
