Ex-Dutch PM dies ‘hand in hand’ with wife in double euthanasia

The late Dutch Prime Minister Dries van Agt has passed away alongside his wife in a joint euthanasia procedure, symbolizing their inseparable bond.

At the age of 93, the couple, Dries and Eugenie, opted for this unique end-of-life choice on Monday. Both were reported to be in ailing health, with van Agt struggling to recover fully from a 2019 brain haemorrhage.

The announcement of this uncommon “duo euthanasia” was made by The Rights Forum, a charitable organization founded by van Agt.

A spokesperson said: “He died hand in hand with his beloved wife Eugenie van Agt-Krekelberg.”

“She was the support and anchor with whom he was together for more than 70 years,” the spokesperson said. “He always continued to refer to her as ‘my girl’.”

Eugenie and van Agt shared a 65-year-long marriage that began during their time as students. Van Agt held the position of Dutch prime minister from 1977 to 1982, leading the center-right Christian Democrats, the U.S. Sun reported.
