A Conversation Interrupted:
A Poem

An interrupting voice—small yet strongly uttered.
An interjecting hand—tiny fingers eagerly raised.
Curiosity erupting from the mind to the body’s rudder—
Simultaneous compulsions on a taught nerve played.

An impatient dance slowly then swiftly shuffles—
Side to side, foot to foot, swaying at the hips.
A hem tugged, turning into wrinkled ruffles—
And baby teeth sinking into uncooperative lips.

In a last-ditch effort, a bold shoulder tapping
And a little face peeking into dialogue’s periphery.
A mimic watching reactions, with eyes closely mapping
What socializing leads to attention’s verbal revelry.

“The adults are talking”—acquiescing to the distraction plot,
An acknowledgement of a losing battle rightly fought.
