The fictional Mercy Myrtle, portrayed excellently by Patsy Merran in Jamestown (2017-2019), was an indentured servant serving her years required by the Virginia Company in Jamestown, Virginia. Indentured servants comprised half of Jamestown's population in the late 1600s. Choosing to use British men and women instead of slaves, Jamestown enabled social mobility for these indentured servants. Learn more about the indentured servitude of Jamestown in this video.
