Fourth-generation warfare (**4GW**) is [conflict](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/War) characterized by a blurring of the distinction between [war](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/War) and [politics](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Politics), and of the distinction between [combatants](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Combatants) and [civilians](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Civilians).

The term was first used in 1980 by a team of [United States](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States) analysts, including [William S. Lind](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_S._Lind), to describe [warfare](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/War)'s return to a [decentralized](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Decentralized) form. In terms of [generational modern warfare](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Generational_modern_warfare), the fourth generation signifies the [nation states](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nation_state)' loss of their near-monopoly on combat forces, returning to modes of conflict common in pre-modern times.

The simplest definition includes any war in which one of the major participants is not a [state](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sovereign_state) but rather a [violent non-state actor](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Violent_non-state_actor). Classical examples of this type of conflict, such as the [slave uprising under Spartacus](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Third_Servile_War), predate the modern concept of warfare.

Fifth-generation warfare (5GW) is warfare that is conducted primarily through [non-kinetic military action](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kinetic_military_action), such as [social engineering](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Social_engineering_(political_science)), [misinformation](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Misinformation), [cyberattacks](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cyberattack), along with emerging technologies such as [artificial intelligence](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Artificial_intelligence) and fully [autonomous systems](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Autonomous_robot). Fifth generation warfare has been described by Daniel Abbot as a war of "information and perception".[[1]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fifth-generation_warfare#cite_note-1) There is no widely agreed upon definition of fifth-generation warfare,[[2]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fifth-generation_warfare#cite_note-2) and it has been rejected by some scholars, including [William S.
