TODAY IN PHILOSOPHY OF HISTORY: Hill and Sorokin: An Addendum on Theoretical History

Christopher Hill said that seventeenth century England was a century of revolution, fighting over two conceptions of civilization; Pitirim Sorokin said that the crisis of the twentieth century was a transition from one kind of cultural system into another. Both appeal to taxonomies of social formations, Hill implicitly and Sorokin explicitly. Can history grow into a discipline in which we can make abstract and theoretical claims about history?
